Lol. At least that’s what I’ve been saying. I Saw Smaug. Then I usually get a Huh, at which point I elaborate and say that I’ve just been to see The Hobbit Part II, The Desolation of Smaug. This is still the story of one hobbit’s amazing adventure, as well as twelve dwarves trying to take back their home-under-a-mountain, but make no mistake about it, the dragon is the star of this show.
He’s exactly like you’d think a giant, fire-breathing, practically invulnerable creature would be, arrogant, condescending, and a complete smart-alec to a fault. But it is so entertaining to watch him act. And he does act, this entirely CGI creature is as much fun to watch as Gollum ever was, if not more. It gives me hope that perhaps more movies containing dragons and other fantastic creatures who have signifigant roles will be made at last(Looking directly at Dragons of Autumn Twilight and the Dragonlance Chronicles). Time will tell in that aspect, until then I can always hope.
Anyway, it’s a great show, well worth watching. And to anyone who’d seen the cartoon Rankin-Bass made of the Hobbit in the early 70’s and wondered if Smaug is like he was in that show, the answer is yes, absolutely. He even says some of the same lines. Awesome.
See You in the Future
